A Horror Saga

A quote by a standup comedian Artie Lange.

A very recent news story revealed one of the most shocking outcomes in the annals of addiction. Published in mid-December, a piece written by Savannah Tryens-Fernandes documented the fraught history of a man who had been seen in public that very week “for the first time in five years.” Back in the day, Artie Lange had gained prominence through being the on-air sidekick of extremely popular talk-show host Howard Stern.

But why would a professional comedian, a well-known performer whose talent made him the very definition of a public figure, have sequestered himself for so long? The extremely disturbing answer is that he existed for years with an appallingly disfigured nose. The deformity was being talked about back in 2016, with the unfortunate appendage described by the press as both swollen and deflated at the same time. But Lange held back on reacting.

Three years later, when interviewed for a podcast episode, he revealed how the regrettable situation had come about in the first place. Basically, if there were a Lifetime Achievement Award for most egregious addict, Lange would certainly be one of the strongest contenders, noteworthy for his multitude of addictions (which came as no surprise to anyone in show business).

The explanation finally offered to the public began with the acknowledgement of more than 30 years of drug addiction. There was cocaine, and heroin, and alcohol, and gambling, and food too, reckoning by his very out-of-shape physique. (Photos from 2009, for instance, depict a person almost as wide as he was tall. A cynical “hater” might have theorized that the boss liked having him around because Stern himself looked so much better in comparison.)

In several ways, the addictions led to the deformity. At one point, Lange had snorted ground glass, apparently under the mistaken impression that it was a drug. That, and years of cocaine inhalation, had done a pretty good job of dissolving his septum, whose job it is to be the support system for the rest of the nasal structure.

There were multiple arrests for possession of cocaine and heroin. One consequence was spending time in rehab. Apparently, the comedian woke up one day owing well over $50,000 worth of gambling debt, and as a result, he was attacked by an enforcer. Or perhaps it was a random stranger. At any rate, that day’s violence really did a job on what was left of the nose, leaving it to resemble a cupcake left in a child’s pocket all day. Another website has posted a very explicit photo from those days.

At the time of leaving rehab in late 2019, Lange had been sober for seven months. Meanwhile, he told the press that he did not feel any particular urgency about opting for plastic surgery, in part because, without anesthetic and analgesic drugs, it would be much too uncomfortable. In 2020, he announced via social media that he had been sober for exactly a year, with no deep thoughts to share with his fans — “Just #gratitude.” By 2022, he had pretty much stopped doing podcasts and completely dropped off social media.

But then, last December, Senior Investigations and Exclusives Reporter Jessica Finn reported for The Sun on how Lange credited a jail sentence for helping him finally get sober and preach prevention. He was quoted as saying,

The best thing about jail for a drug addict is, it actually locks you away from the drugs for a little while. See, cocaine made my life chaos for a long time. But when heroin came into the game, forget it. Lights out… Once heroin gets in your system you need it like every eight hours. You need it.

Supposedly, within recent months, Lange has had rhinoplasty to repair the nose, although the photographic evidence is scant and taken from a distance, and some of the reportage about the case seems to suffer from confusion about dates.
